Chantry Flats: Sturveyant Falls

I've been on this hike several times, but this is the first time this waterfall was so full. We had some friends from AZ visiting this weekend and we took them here.
It's a great hike, about 4 miles round trip and not too difficult, but stunningly beautiful. There's also so many different trails to try in Chantry Flats. I've done Sturveyant Falls 3 times and Mt Wilson once, and I've been down to the junction of trails a separate time. I'm so glad the fires from last year didn't touch the majority of this area.
(I think this is my favorite picture from the hike)

This trail is off the Santa Anita exit of the 210 fwy. Go north a couple miles to the bottom of the canyon, then continue up the hill for several miles until you reach the parking lot at the end of the road. It is $5 to park here, and you can get this $5 "Adventure Pass" (or $30 for the year) at any REI or other sports/recreation stores. Or they have a little snack shop nearby the parking lot, where you can also get the pass.

Life Is Beautiful

Hello friends!
So, this is the promised post about Mr. Brainwash (MBW) via my previous post about the movie out in theaters right now "Exit Through The Gift Shop." This movie really uncovers the mystery behind this man:
Thierry Guetta, the French videographer, filmed street artists doing their thing for years and years until he decided to do an art show of his own (coining himself as Mr. Brainwash). He got endorsements from these street artists (Banksy, Shepherd Fairey, Space Invader (his cousin)), hired people to create his ideas, and the show was widely advertised. I don't think any of this art is his own, just ideas of his. Actually not that different from Andy Warhol, who also hired people to mass-produce his ideas, although knew how to do a screen print.
Regardless, MBW became more well-known in a matter of weeks than any street artist out there. If anything, he's more of a crazy businessman than an artist.
The movie really exposes him in a realistic yet more negative light. He even admitted that it's amazing how much people will pay for a piece of art that's basically paint splotches on another piece of art. He put his savings (and family) on the line to make this art show, but it ended up making him famous. Regardless of the controversy about "what is art?," I feel that this man, as crazy as he is, had something going for him since he was able to get so many people excited about art and sell out the first night. I went that night with some friends, and stood in line for 2 hours, only to be turned away when we got about 10ft from the front of the line because they were closing for the night and it was too crowded.
I went back a couple days later and these were the pictures I took from that show in June 2008. Whether he was a "fraud" or not, I'm glad I went to the show and enjoyed a free display of interesting pop art. I was working on Guitar Hero at the time...
And had recently met DMC, from Run DMC. So I appreciated this piece of art:

This was a collage of actual records. It was pretty neat. You can click on the picture to see a larger version:

I think this was my favorite part of the show. The 2-story-tall robot made of TV's:
Weird:

The art show was being put together in the warehouse the DAY OF, because MBW broke his leg a few weeks before! Instead of delaying the show, he said whatever was ready would be shown. Some pieces didn't get finished, and remained in a taped-off section of the giant warehouse:
Ah, remember the hype of the last election?

A life-size recreation of Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks" painting... incredible!
Yep, just a cage completely stuffed with stuffed animals:

I'd love to hear from anyone reading this blog... What do you think about this man? Did he steal fame without talent? What is considered art? Based off of my pictures, do you think you'd enjoy this exhibit?
Thanks for reading! Ta Ta for now...

Friday's Photo Of The Week #14

This is my cousin-in-law's son, Kolbe. Such a darling little boy.
It was difficult not to use one of my sister's photos from antiquing as the photo of the week, since they were on my camera. She is such a good photographer. Thanks for taking pictures Jen!!

Listened to Keane this morning. Here's the video and the lyrics of "Somewhere Only We Know."

I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete

Oh simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?

Oh simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute, why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go somewhere only we know?
Somewhere only we know

Oh simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute, why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go? So why don't we go?

Oh, this could be the end of everything
So why don't we go somewhere only we know?
Somewhere only we know
Somewhere only we know

Have a happy weekend. Beso Beso.

Adrieanna's Day

Adrieanna turned 30 this past Tuesday. She is an amazing friend that I've known since highschool who has been there for me through thick and thin. We decided to surprise her for her birthday and take her out. A bunch of her friends even got in on it and made "fake" plans to keep her busy for the day, or free for us.
(me, Jenni, Adrieanna, Candace)

We all got pedicures (I hadn't gotten one in 3 years, and my toenails were finally healed from the Narrows hike last year, very exciting), and then we went antiquing in South Orange. This is the coolest antiquing mecca I've been to. My sister Jenni used my camera to take most of these pictures, but I went in and edited them in photoshop. I thought a lot of them ended up turning out a bit creepy, so I took advantage of that in some of the photos. I'll post some below, but here are all the photos from that day: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=226031&id=527707845&l=6eec6b39b3. And a shout out to Adrieanna, for all the love and support she has brought her family and friends throughout the years, and many more years to come.
I love you!

Friday's Photo Of The Week #13

Photo of the Week (posted earlier this week, but had to post again)
I love the perspective, colors, and negative space in this photo. And the subject: A man and his dog, out in nature. Can't be beat!
Some random tidbits:
This morning I got into my car and went to turn on the pandora station on my phone, but before I did, some random music started playing for me. It was sort of an electronic beat with no lyrics except an occasional "come on". It lasted for about a minute and then stopped. I have no idea where it came from since the auxiliary was turned on, but no music was actually playing from the stereo or my phone. It's a mystery to me...

I bought a CD this week: Codeine Velvet Club. I love it. This is one of the bands I saw at SXSW.
Here's a video on youtube for you to enjoy:

And a few pictures that I took while at SXSW 2010:

Cheers!
